Carnevale – World’s Faire Afterparty Review

Hello and welcome to my first review being the new Carnevale starter set ‘World’s Faire Afterparty’ by TTcombat (World’s Faire Afterparty **PRE-ORDER NOVEMBER 28th** – TTCombat). I lucky enough to receive my box early. Before we begin, I would like to make it clear I am in no way affiliated with TTcombat and have purchased this set myself. I bought this set from a third-party store who for reasons unknown to me have sent it early.

Now I could go on and talk about the box for a while but that’s not why we are here. The box is made of thin cardboard with high quality prints on every side of the exterior with the inside being left plain. The box does its job well of containing the contents.

Miniatures

The main part of the box I assume everyone is most interested in is the new models. New models that are in plastic, which I believe is a first for Carnevale.

The models themselves are very high detail and well made in my opinion but I will let you judge for yourself.

Unfortunately, though all of the models are on one sprue so it seems unlikely they will be sold separately, as far as I know they don’t mix factions (except starter boxes). This does mean you have to buy the entire box for the ones you want or likely pay a high price second hand. I would also assume that this means they won’t be sold individually either. This is a similar issue Games Workshop has often had.

At the time of writing there are no instructions available (none in the box or online) but I assume they will be available as soon as the box is officially released. Hopefully with the introduction of plastic models more people will be willing to try the game, as resin models can be a barrier to many players for many reasons.

Bases are provided for all the miniatures, they are the standard plain bases.

Rest of the box

You get an A5 rulebook that is well printed and good quality paper. This rulebook is the same as the current PDF rules however it’s nice to have a professional printed copy.

Two sets of six dice are provided, one for each player.

A set of card terrain is provided to get you started. The material is thin but rigid, so it won’t bend easily. It comes with a bridge, gondola, six obstacles of which three are designed for the water, three for land. There are a fountain type terrain piece and a set of tokens. Three folding card buildings are included.

Rules for both gangs are included, although these are slightly different to the PDF variant, this is to make all the rules fit the two starter scenarios and to make it somewhat easier to learn. The backs of the cards provide a lore description of each gang. These are on a similar type of card to the scenery although it is a little more flexible.

Two simple starter scenarios are included. The first just focuses on the basic actions a character can make, excluding things like agendas, will points, command points and such. The second brings it all in for a full game, I will let you discover that one yourself.

A single copy of the quick reference sheet is printed on the same material as the scenario and gang rules.

Lastly is the game mat, unfortunately this is too big for me to photograph. It has two sides, the one shown on all of the advertisement images and the other is similar to the one from the advertising images of the San Canciano box although I don’t have that one making it hard to compare.

Overall I think this a good starter set made with high quality materials. I will mainly be using it for introduction games to try and make the game more popular in my local area.

Hope this is helpful, I will most likely return to this once I have the miniatures painted.
